I'm in the middle of a frustrating research project for my Dad and maybe you can help.

Dad wanted to get Mom the Sondheim on Sondheim CD for their anniversary, but as far as I can tell, it's not coming out until August. Which means he wants me to find "baroque music" for her.

But that's waaaay too vague. Certainly I can pick some nice things out, but I want to find something really...anniversary worthy.

Oh wise LJ braintrust, do you have any favorite baroque music? Something you would call anniversary worthy?

Chamber orchestra, choral, or keyboard?

Good choices for the first are The Brandenberg Concertos, Royal Fireworks Music, and Vivaldi's Concerto Grossos. (Pardon the mixed-language pluralization.)

For the second, Messiah or Mass in B Minor would be good.

For the latter, perhaps Art of the Fugue.

Maybe some English love madrigals? Shirley and I are fond of "The King's Singers" in that vein...

I don't know if it is baroque, exactly, but I'm thinking anything by The East Village Opera Company. Maybe something by Bernadette Peters, since she's starred in so much of Sondheim's stuff?

I have nothing helpful to share, but I had a really weird dream last night and you were in it.

Actually, I was in your house (although I doubt the house in my dream is really what your place looks like). I was in your kitchen, trying to bake cookies (I think they were for you), but the kitchen was really messy and I couldn't find the stuff I needed so it was taking me forever. And then you came in and for some reason I decided to invite you to do club drugs with me at some time in the future but you said you weren't really into that so we decided we'd just do wine instead.

Just thought you should know that I was thinking of you. Sort of. :)

It was really, really messy. Like not quite Hoarders messy, but maybe semi-approaching it. I'm sorry that my subconscious imagined your kitchen that way. :)

I think the time in my life for things like club drugs is probably long past. But the wine thing could be kinda awesome, whenever we manage to make it happen.

I wouldn't even know where to START! But you also might try this question at some of the classical-themed lj communities like [livejournal.com profile] classical_share and [livejournal.com profile] pianists, among others...

Beatles go Baroque.

Best. CD. Ever. It totally broke my brain in a wonderful way.

Bu-bu-bu-beatles go bu-bu-bu-baroque?

(Gah. Amazon cuts in in the middle of songs, it seems, and I like to hear the beginnings of Beatles covers.)

But, I think I must get this.

(Apparently, there are several different takes on the concept, according to the iTunes Music Store.)

Step one, find out what they have already.

Step two, pick a Handel opera they don't already have.
