You know, it sort of kind of feels like we've moved from one challenge to another for the last few months...first Miriam with her neck, then my Dad getting sick in October, then Dad's heart surgery, and now he's still undergoing all kinds of cognitive function tests to figure out whether there's something wrong with him or the confusion he's experiencing is a normal part of recovering from major cardiac surgery.

Naomi sang the alphabet song today, all by herself. Most of it was even comprehensible. Miriam is starting to climb furniture, which is really amusing. And dangerous.

My new computer will probably arrive early next week.

Naomi is starting to ask about writing letters. One of the things entirelysonja mentioned teaching her was to properly grasp a pencil before we really start working on letters. When given a marker, she automatically grasps it with a correct grip in her left hand, but in her right, she uses a typical toddler fist-style grip. She switches back and forth when she uses utensils to eat, so I can't figure out which hand to start with from that either. I'm going to get her some maze books and some tracing books and some connect the dots books to play with to work on the skills involved and let her play with that for a while (thanks Sonja for the idea.)

We went to see the Space Shuttle go up yesterday along with ladysmith her son and another family. The kids had a wonderful time, they came home tired and messy. Naomi's perspective on it? "Bye bye! Go outer space!" I'll put "proximity to the Space Coast" on my list of things I don't hate about Florida.

Trying to come up with a gift for a friend who is having her third baby shower. She's got two kids already, a boy and a girl, her next oldest kid is the same age as Naomi and the baby she's expecting is the same sex as the previous one. I'm not sure what to get for a third baby shower. The shower is in about five weeks, so I don't really have time to make something either.

I was reading today on a parenting board for children born in April 08 that someone's daughter, the same age as Naomi was diagnosed with autism today. I'm reminded once again of how lucky I am to have healthy children.

And well behaved children too...I read another post on the same board from a different parent who was describing her child's behavior. The same kinds of things I see with Naomi, but she wants to know why her discipline doesn't work. I'm left wondering how much of the fact that my children are well behaved is just their personalities and how much is due to the discipline that we've chosen. They're not perfect, but they're wonderful.

The third baby shower I'd give gift certs to have places to eat or grocery stores so they can have food delivered.

I've been told by OT people that playdoh is the best handwriting helper. It helps build the fine motor skills and muscles in your hands that you need to write.
