(New Maccabeats song about Purim.)

Purim is one of my own favorite holidays. It's a joyful holiday predicated on the recurring theme in Jewish history-"They tried to kill us. We survived. Let's eat!"

We'll probably take Naomi to the Purim Schpiel this year at the schul we like. She may not handle the noise well, but we'll sit near the back and if she can't handle it, we can always step out. She'll enjoy getting to wear her princess dress and crown. I assume we'll take Miriam as well, but I'm not sure how she'll handle it.

This weekend will probably involve hamentaschen. Lots and lots of hamentaschen. Flavors (beyond apricot, cause that's my favorite) TBD. Miriam will get to eat her first hamentaschen this year too.

And then [livejournal.com profile] ladysmith and I need to get to work on our Passover project.

And making the hamentaschen, too. We can start hashing things out on Thursday, maybe? And we need to pick a date to make cookies.

I love this line so much.

Heh, so do I. :-) It's one of the strong themes in Chinese cultural things too, although it's usually less explicitly tied to a historical event.

I think Pesach tips out Purim as favourite Jewish festival for me, but I think it's just because I like the close-family-story scenario more than the community-festival scenario.

Oh, I think I agree with you about that - Pesach, whilst not itself sad, I think is engaged with a somehow more mournful context. I'm a bit old-skool goth, so that sorta doesn't bother me really.

But Purim, I think in large part because of the whole "community festival" aspect is a much more joyful and fun celebration, for sure. :-)

Never had much experience with it - as a non Jew attending a Reform Jewish high school we did a lot of stuff, but I never really participated in a regular way in the Synagogue related events, I guess. I'm pretty sure I went to one Simchat Torah celebration, it seemed interesting - but probably would have felt more excited/interested if I'd been there for the full cycle of readings.

I suspect the other reason I like Pesach in preference to the other festivals is that I'm not actually Jewish, and it's an easy celebration one to include non Jews in, in a way, especially if the non-Jews have immigration/diaspora backgrounds themselves there are usually strong parallels.

I also really like the Hanukkah lights ceremony. :-)

Earplugs. We brought them when we did 4th of July on the Esplanade and Hootie had a great time because the noise wasn't as intimidating.

Hiya *sheepish wave*

When I realized that most of the april moms were really done with the group, I friended a couple of the people I'd want to be able to keep track of. You were one of them. We'd talked quite a long time ago about our overlapping friends. Remember? BridgetMinerva was our doula when Hootie was born..... I used to be on elbows but got tired of the resident ettiquette nazi in the group.

Hootie did wear earplugs when we showed him what they were intended to do. Once he knew that they were a way for him to get what he wanted from the experience, he was completely willing to leave them in.

Just have to say I think their harmonies are fantastic. I know Candlelight is so four months ago or whatever but I still rock out to it in the car.

I would love it!

She doesn't have a costume. I am clueless about what we'll dress up as! I should probably think about it...
