Chag Purim!
Mar. 8th, 2011 04:30 pm(New Maccabeats song about Purim.)
Purim is one of my own favorite holidays. It's a joyful holiday predicated on the recurring theme in Jewish history-"They tried to kill us. We survived. Let's eat!"
We'll probably take Naomi to the Purim Schpiel this year at the schul we like. She may not handle the noise well, but we'll sit near the back and if she can't handle it, we can always step out. She'll enjoy getting to wear her princess dress and crown. I assume we'll take Miriam as well, but I'm not sure how she'll handle it.
This weekend will probably involve hamentaschen. Lots and lots of hamentaschen. Flavors (beyond apricot, cause that's my favorite) TBD. Miriam will get to eat her first hamentaschen this year too.
And then

Date: 2011-03-09 12:46 am (UTC)I think Pesach tips out Purim as favourite Jewish festival for me, but I think it's just because I like the close-family-story scenario more than the community-festival scenario.

Date: 2011-03-09 02:47 am (UTC)When I realized that most of the april moms were really done with the group, I friended a couple of the people I'd want to be able to keep track of. You were one of them. We'd talked quite a long time ago about our overlapping friends. Remember? BridgetMinerva was our doula when Hootie was born..... I used to be on elbows but got tired of the resident ettiquette nazi in the group.
Hootie did wear earplugs when we showed him what they were intended to do. Once he knew that they were a way for him to get what he wanted from the experience, he was completely willing to leave them in.

Date: 2011-03-09 05:39 am (UTC)I suspect the other reason I like Pesach in preference to the other festivals is that I'm not actually Jewish, and it's an easy celebration one to include non Jews in, in a way, especially if the non-Jews have immigration/diaspora backgrounds themselves there are usually strong parallels.
I also really like the Hanukkah lights ceremony. :-)
