Pain, cookies, games, and weekends.

Wow. It took three days for me to stop feeling like I'd been trampled by an elephant, and have not quite full use of my midsection again. Thursday night I went with tommx to karate. And by Friday morning I had never felt such pain in my abs and lats before. Saturday morning, it was still in Elephant-Trampling pain. Saturday evening, after many hot baths, it was reduced to gorilla trampling pain. And now, I'm almost back to normal. You know what? I'm looking forward to going back.

I did manage to bake sugar cookies which I'm really happy with. I'm a big fan of plain-ish cookies...shortbreads and sugar cookies and things like that. I do wish I could bake gingersnaps like aquariumgirl's husband. Yum!


1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 1/4 cups flour
1 Tbsp extract (I used about 2/3 vanilla and 1/3 lemon, but adjust it to
taste-I may try closer to half and half next time, but I like a lot of
lemon flavor-you could probably use any flavor combo you liked)
1 tsp baking soda
extra sugar for topping
additional cookie decorations like colored sugar or sprinkles if you want

Mix the butter and the sugar together in a mixing bowl until creamy
Add egg and extracts-beat until light and fluffy

Add salt, flour and baking soda, beat until well mixed.

Divide dough in half, and shape into logs 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch in diameter.
Chill in fridge for at least an hour.

Preheat oven to 375. Slice dough into about 1 1/4 inch thick slices.
Sprinkle with toppings, and bake for about 9 minutes, until golden


I got about six dozen out of the recipe, but I think it depends on how
much dough you eat. You could probably ice these cookies if you
wanted-I'd wait to decorate them until after they were iced.

I suspect this dough would freeze well too.




Looking forward to a game of Civ this weekend; the boardgame, not the computer game. I will undoubtedly get my butt soundly kicked yet again; I'm not very good at it but it's fun to play, and to try and figure out how it works. Hopefully I'll get a good spot this time. And aquariumgirl will play Crete. She's good at that.

Otherwise, a less than exciting long weekend. I'm a bit disappointed that I'm not at Arisia this weekend. There's always next year. I should be studying for the dreaded GREs, and maybe I'll spend some time tomorrow doing that. I made a decent pot of stew in the crockpot yesterday...still need to tweak the seasoning, so I really say "mmmm." Beta took a flying leap and tried to climb a vertical tile wall in the bathroom. He missed and bonked his head, but he seems okay. He's sitting on my army as I type. I kind of wonder if he'll be the same supercuddly kitty, who wakes me by climbing on my chest, nudging my neck and purring and demanding attention and all that after he's neutered. Course I do hope that he'll stop trying to mount Oblivion. Oblivion has been sweet like nothing else, sitting on the sore spots and warming them, to make me feel better. She's this sweet and sensitive cat-seems to know when I'm not right, not feeling well. Not like Mugs who didn't leave my father's side for quite a while after his knee surgery; following him to the bathroom, the kitchen, and staying right next to his knee when he was sitting. aquariumgirl brought over a new monitor yesterday...I'm back at 17 inches and it's fantastic. Course Beta had to be in the middle of everything because well, he can't be left alone. Nope. He's got to be in the middle of whatever he wants; it's like when he climbs onto the printer while it's printing, and sticks his paws on the paper coming out-so it smudges or jams.

A few things to do, and then off to games.

i strongly advocate a warm bath after karate. in the absence of a warm bath, a shower. it will help soothe aching muscles.

and, after a few weeks, your abs will start to fall in line. glad you've finally made it. we're glad to have you.

I've had about eight baths in four days. I can reach over my head without wincing today. Coughing/sneezing/laughing were painful. I'm not sure how they'll do today, but we'll see-Civ often engenders laughter.

You've doubtless seen my past few days worth of ramblings on the topic, but if Preia's any indication, he'll likely be standoffish til he heals, and then resume the regular affection. Two days after her spaying, she's spending part of her time in seclusion and the rest of her time cuddled up close. She's not quite back to normal yet, but getting there.

Your cat is much smarter than mine, who nearly needed to be taken to the emergency vet in the middle of the night last night when he tried to climb the tile wall in the bathroom and hit his head on the bathtub. He's fine...right now perched atop the printer. IIRC, the boys healed much faster than the girls but it's been years since I had to have a cat spayed or neutered-the last four that we adopted were all adult strays who moved into the house and were already fixed when they got there.

I think maybe I worry more because Betakitty is the first animal I adopted as a baby all by myself, so I kind of baby him. But he's such a sweet little munchkin.
