The morning of the big Oakland Hills fire, I put my guitar, wedding dress, and family photos in the back of our truck. My mother in law (we lived with her for a couple of years before we got married) got out the cat carriers and her important papers. Then we figured we wouldn't get evacuated.
At 2 pm, helicopters flew over, telling us to leave. We were out in 10 minutes, because we were ready. (The fire stopped about a mile by road and 1/2 mile by air from the house.)
So get your basics ready, like prescriptions and cat carriers, then you'll end up not being evacuated, but on the off chance . . . you'll be fine.
Cat carriers ready. Extra litterbox packed. Cat food packed. Extra litter packed. Just about ready to go in case I need to or want to. I'm on the second floor, so it's not so bad...
