I think the chances of my actually being evacuated are slim to none...but at the same time, I'd rather not have to go digging for cat carriers in the dark. Carriers are stored in the basement.
I did find out which shelter will take me and the cats though...I know where my sleeping bag is. (It's not the closest shelter, but it's also not far either..it's the second closest one. Two county shelters at high schools with animal science programs will accept pets with their owners.)
I also have an offer from friends who are further inland, away from the river to take the three of us in if necessary.
I think I'll go grab the cat carriers just in case. Cause if I do actually go get them, I won't get evacuated. If I don't get take them out, you know they'll come get me after the power goes out.
I'll be fine. I know where to go, and not to drive through standing water and all that. I think however that I'm going to pack a bag just in case, because if I don't, then I'll end up needed to leave...you know?
I spoke to Gram this morning...she was kind of grouchy with me because I didn't answer the phone yesterday (I was at the eye doctor, I had told her I was going to be home because I thought I would be, but ended up having to go pick up new contacts, which took twice as long as it should have.)
I'm really glad she went to Peg's. I got her as ready as I could, but I was uncomfortable with her being home alone. I told Anne that if she refused to go to Peg's or your Mom's to call me and I'd go wait out the storm with her.
And thanks for the offer of space. I'll see what happens...right now the evacuations are in Belleview/Ft. Hunt/New Alexandria, which is far enough that I feel safe, but if they get any closer, I may go. I pulled the cat carriers out, and I'm going to pack the cat stuff and my bag.
Thanks. I'm going to stay unless the evacuations get closer, but I'm going to prepare to go just in case. If I prepare to go, I won't have to...you know?
The morning of the big Oakland Hills fire, I put my guitar, wedding dress, and family photos in the back of our truck. My mother in law (we lived with her for a couple of years before we got married) got out the cat carriers and her important papers. Then we figured we wouldn't get evacuated.
At 2 pm, helicopters flew over, telling us to leave. We were out in 10 minutes, because we were ready. (The fire stopped about a mile by road and 1/2 mile by air from the house.)
So get your basics ready, like prescriptions and cat carriers, then you'll end up not being evacuated, but on the off chance . . . you'll be fine.
Cat carriers ready. Extra litterbox packed. Cat food packed. Extra litter packed. Just about ready to go in case I need to or want to. I'm on the second floor, so it's not so bad...
Yeah, we got each other on the phone, I'm going to wait until there's a bit more definite word before I leave. Sounds like you guys are in a good, safe place though.

Date: 2003-09-18 06:07 pm (UTC)Then again I've not got much of a view from my apartment. But seemed relatively calm looking across the river from Dad's place too.
Guess we'll see what the late night is like.
*hugs*
