Okay Jews and Kitchen Mavens alike....

I need a hamentaschen recipe.

I need a fabulous yummy hamentaschen recipe. And if you have mohn filling to go along with it, that would be really extra neat.

See, I haven't baked them in years. And [livejournal.com profile] aquariumgirl hasn't ever done it. So we wanna do it. And Purim is only a couple of weeks away.

So if you know how to do it, share share share share please?

I might be able to help you out. I'll check through the cookbook library, I know that I used to own several Jewish Cookbooks, one of them a holiday cookbook. You might also want to check with Dolfin. -sM

I made them for the first time last year. I sent Kelly to school with the leftovers and for the past year her co-workers have been asking when I would make more.

I get the filling straight from cans of Solo brand poppy-seed filling. I got the recipe I used last year off of Boston.com but it's no longer there. I'll see if I can find another copy.

You'd be surprised at where the stuff turns up. Last year, we waited until the last minute to buy it. The grocery store in Cambridge had sold out, but the grocery store in much-less-Jewish Medford had plenty.

Will e-mail mom and ask for hers... for some reason, I think it is based on a sour-cream cookie recipe. My favorite hamentashen? Marmalade with a Hershey Kiss. Yum!

Hamantaschen

Cream together:
½ cup margarine
1 cup sugar

Beat in:
1 egg
1 tspn vanilla
½ cup plain or vanilla yogurt

Mix in:
1 tspn baking powder
½ tspn baking soda
½ tspn salt
2 2/3 cups plain flour

Refrigerate at least 2 hrs. or overnight
Roll out the dough about ¼” thick
Cut into circles - about 3-4" across
Put a spoonful of filling into the center of each circle
Dampen the edges with water
Fold into 3-cornered *hats*, pinching the edges together well
Place on sprayed baking sheet
Bake at 350 till barely golden - about 8-10 mins
Cool on a rack

(The plain dough makes excellent cookies!)

Hmm. For all us non-jewish folk, what on earth is a hamentaschen? (and i had to cut and paste that or risk butchering it beyond recognition.:)
