There are a tonne of reminder posts about voting on my f'list these days. I've read them all. I think [livejournal.com profile] also_huey's post was particularly interesting. Huey (who is fabulous, by the way) also pointed me at this.

I'll vote. Probably late in the morning, but we'll see. I spent quite a bit of time checking out and deciding on the ballot amendments, especially on Vote Smart, Florida's website.

In other, less exciting news about life, we went to the local Ren Faire over the weekend and were very disappointed. We'll probably check out some of the other ones in the next few months. We'll skip Sarasota, because it's this weekend and next weekend...this is our only free weekend until December, and the following weekend is Pirate Festival. But, we'll check out Gainsville and probably Tampa. We're both looking forward to the Pirate Fair...a little bit of a change from Ren Faires.

We're going to be on Long Island (at Mom and Dad's) for Thanksgiving-we arrive Tuesday, and come back Monday. We haven't decided on any visitation plans yet, but we might try and do a whirlwind Jersey Tour on Saturday or Sunday if anyone wants to see us.

I need to shop for some clothes, and I need new shoes for Canada-my sister in law had serious admonishments over my choice of Doc Maartens in the snow last year. She complains they have no traction. I trust her, after the slipping and sliding I did, and am considering a different pair of shoes. I probably need new jeans too-it's hard to say when I don't wear them very often.

I think I cast on the same knitting project about fifteen times, and the casting on is fine, but I'm going nuts trying to count stitches and I can't find any stitch markers. I have some yarn I bought over the weekend that turns out to be too lightweight for the project I'd planned it for, so I'll exchange the three skeins I haven't wound for something bulkier, and pick up some more stitch markers. I'll keep the stuff I wound and toss it into the scrap yarn project-knitted patches done in a basketweave and a cable pattern (note to self, buy cable needle as well) and probably crocheted granny squares. Not necessarily turned into the same afghan, but we'll see, as I complete things.

I am a little bit looking forward to cool weather that we'll get in New York and in Canada. I enjoy the little bits of it that we get when we visit. I'm looking forward to more house -organizing, like acquiring bookshelves, and proper storage for craft things. And other stuff.

Eh, it's life. It keeps happening.

This is the meme that's going around in LJ circles lately...

"'Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?'- Ernest Gaines

We would like to know who really believes in gay rights* on LiveJournal. There is no bribe of a miracle or anything like that. If you truly believe in gay rights*, then repost this and title the post as "Gay Rights". If you don't believe in gay rights*, then just ignore this. Thanks. "

(Yes I posted it, mostly so I can write what follows with context for people who haven't seen it yet.)

I'm sure there's no question among readers of this journal what my feelings are on gay rights. I won't sit here and write about my feelings on guns.

I will say that I'd rather see two men holding hands than holding guns. I will say that whether or not someone chooses to post this says nothing about where that person stands on the issue of gay rights, civil rights or human rights in general. I will say that the "you're with us or against us" rhetoric is a lot like the language that came from the Bush administration about the "War on Terror" which many people have mentioned strong, negative feelings about.

In summary, if you are curious about I feel about an issue, ask. If I feel strongly about an issue, I might post about it. I might not. But I'm not likely to resort to memes to express my feelings.

Besides the fact that they thought it was a good idea to elect Katherine Harris, who played a significant role in the debacle that was the 2000 presidential election...

Today was primary day. So I went and voted. But of course, the airwaves have been filled with political ads leading up to today's primary.

Republican candidate 1 has an ad that attacks Republican candidate 2. Republican candidate 1's ad includes "Sorry, Charlie, only Jeb Bush conservatives get to be president." Republican candidate 2's ad includes "pro-life, Ronald Reagan republican you can trust."

Blech.

Remember former Florida Secretary of State? She's a frequent news item here, because she's running for Senate against incumbent Bill Nelson. And apparently, even the rest of the Republicans don't think she's a good candidate.

Talk about Karma...A waitress asks to see ID before serving a patron a drink, only to be handed her own stolen license.

And, today is the 25th anniversary of MTV's debut. There are a few top N lists floating around. Here's one from the Detroit Free Press and a different one from the AP. Have an interesting opinion piece, for good measure, too.

VH1 Classic is re-running the programming from the first day. I do wish they would bring back Remote Control though. And is anyone else watching VH1's World Series of Pop Culture?

(The title is a quote from [livejournal.com profile] ruralrob-more on that in the second paragraph of my post...)

First of all, I'm mystified that there's nothing I can find going on in or around Orlando to honor today. I was on the phone with someone at the GLB community center (They've left out the T part, not me...) last night who couldn't find anything, and seemed vaguely surprised about it as well. I'll give them a call later today and ask "what's up?"-looks like this little activist has found some things to do.

Second, I think people need to go read [livejournal.com profile] ruralrob's post "Shame, Philadelphia, Redemption" honoring World AIDS Day. Rob is a fantastic person to begin with, eloquent, creative, and a wonderful story teller, and a fantastic photographer. I think he expressed a sentiment in his post that I didn't come close to in mine....

It's sometimes hard being an AIDS activist, but along the way one learns to both celebrate and mourn well. On December 1, World AIDS Day, I hope you understand why we do both."

I read Rob's post and feel completely inadequate.

I wrote elsewhere about women and HIV for today, so you may have seen this part posted elsewhere, though I've editorialized a bit more on the bottom in my own journal...

Here's what I wrote:

For World AIDS Day 2005…

In 2005, twenty-five years into the AIDS Pandemic women are still very much affected by HIV and AIDS. Globally, half of the people infected with HIV are women, but women are disproportionately affected with care-giving responsibilities for family members, whether or not they’re infected.

Some of the major issues relating to women and HIV… )

What can you do?

  • Know your own HIV status. If you’re engaging in any kind of risky behavior, get tested regularly, and consider ways to reduce your risk.

  • Take responsibility for your own sexual health-get regular check ups, encourage friends and partners to do the same. Make good decisions about using contraception, about reducing your risk of unwanted consequences of sexual behavior and about what you want.

  • Learn to say no and mean it. Make clear, well thought out decisions about what you want, how far you’re willing to go and what risks you’re willing to take. And most importantly, communicate your boundaries clearly to your partner, before you get too hot to do that. The number one advocate for your sexual health is you.

  • Know what resources are available in your community for HIV information-prevention, treatment, testing, and support them in whatever ways you can. Supporting those organizations can mean giving time or money, or it can mean making sure to point people who need their resources at the places that provide them.
Support initiatives, projects and programs that try to provide accurate, honest information and services about sexuality and sexual health.

  • Love yourself. Recognizing your own value as a person does a great deal in helping people make healthy choices and reduce risky behavior.

  • Remember that HIV and AIDS aren’t a one day thing…they’re an everyday thing. Despite advances in treatment, HIV still has no cure. It takes the efforts of all of us to stay safe and healthy, to prevent the spread of HIV further, to support the efforts to find cures, to ensure access to treatment and services for everyone who needs it.

Find out more about HIV and educate yourself. Check out some of these websites for more information:
    Know HIV
    HIV InSite
    The Body
    United Nations AIDS Information
The American Medical Student Association Global AIDS Pandemic Timeline

I think the most important message in this is self-worth...it really does make a difference in the kinds of choices many people make. I also know that today makes me feel helpless an inadequate. I feel like there's so much more work for me to do, and that I'll never do enough.

Still, I hope I can figure out how to do my part...

Indiana's attempts to regulate assisted reproduction in ways that would effectively eliminate single people and same sex couples from becoming parents. It would require things like includes the fertility history of the parents, education and employment information, personality descriptions, verification of marital status, child-care plans and criminal background checks. Getting an approval certifiate would also require a description of the "family lifestyle of the intended parents," and don't forget the part about participation in faith-based activities.

(ETA: The orignial sponsor has withdrawn it...but that still doesn't explain how it got out of committee in the first place.)

Best response to comments about how allowing same sex couples to marry would lead to things like marriage between a man and his dog:

"Only a demented crackpot would think that."

I know that many of my readers are residents of Virginia, or know people who reside there.
I know that many of you care about womens health, and reproductive rights.

Live in Virginia, Have a miscarriage, go to jail?

I'm no longer a resident of Virginia, but you can bet your buns that I'd be all over this if I were still there.
